Promoting good behaviour

The Behaviour Working Party – on which there was a parent representative - has recently reviewed and updated the School Behaviour Policy which can be viewed on the school Website.

There was extensive consultation on this policy with the children and all staff, including questionnaires for both, and a new set of school rules was decided on – using Brad the Bee as our enforcer of the rules!  The rules are:

  • Be respectful
  • Be honest
  • Be a good worker
  • Be a good listener
  • Be polite
  • Be calm
  • Be sensible
  • Be kind and helpful
  • Be tidy
  • Bee-have!
The rules form the basis of everything we do in school and apply equally to everyone who works and learns in the school.

children playingChildren earn Golden Time each week of up to 30 minutes when they can have free choice activity time.  If children break school rules they lose some of this time but have every opportunity to earn it back before the Golden Time session.

All staff in the school use stickers, certificates and other small prizes to reward good behaviour.  We believe that rewarding good behaviour has a positive effect on all children and try to focus on this aspect rather than sanctions.

Where sanctions are needed there are clearly defined structures such as Warning Cards, Time out in TOADS (Time Out and Dinnertime Supervision) and as a final resort children can be temporarily or permanently excluded.  However, the last option is not one favoured by the school and every effort has been made over the last five years to ensure that this does not happen.  There have been no temporary or permanent exclusions during this time.
