Behaviour Policy

Rough Hay Primary School Behaviour Policy and Guidelines
"We should behave to our friends as we would wish our friends to behave to us." Aristotle

Rationale
At Rough Hay school we believe that good behaviour is a necessary condition for effective teaching to take place and an important outcome of education which society rightly expects. It is a partnership of trust, self discipline and responsibility between staff, children and parents.
We believe that all pupils should behave in a responsible manner both to themselves and to others, showing consideration, courtesy and respect for other people at all times. Our emphasis lies in positive reinforcement, rewards and praise rather than on sanctions and punishment.

Aims
To promote a positive attitude to learning in both children and parents.
To set and expect high standards of behaviour, courtesy and mutual respect.
To encourage self discipline and personal responsibility through a positive atmosphere of trust.
To ensure that the school will look after the welfare of all pupils by providing a safe and secure environment.

Objectives
To ensure that the whole school community is aware of the school’s ethos, the school rules and the guidelines on action regarding all aspects of behaviour.
To ensure that the behaviour policy and the school rules are consistently implemented through the school classwork, staff development and liaison with parents.
To develop a positive self image in all children.
To ensure that pupils behave well in and around the school are courteous and trustworthy and show respect for property.
To ensure that pupils form constructive relationships with one another, with teachers and other adults and work collaboratively when required.
To ensure that pupils show initiative and are willing to take responsibility.
To ensure that appropriate behaviour is rewarded and that examples of acceptable behaviour are publicly acknowledged.
To ensure that all staff know that they have a duty to respond to reported incidents of abuse or bullying (see anti-bullying policy).
To ensure children know the appropriate course of action required following an incident of abuse or bullying (see anti-bullying policy).
To build stronger community links in order that pupils respect and value their local community

Code of Behaviour
The school has updated its Code of behaviour this term to link with the school logo. All pupils and parents are aware of the new version. This will ensure that everyone in the school is working to the same standards and fully understands them.

  • Be respectful.
  • Be honest.
  • Be a good worker.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Be polite.
  • Be calm.
  • Be sensible.
  • Be kind and helpful.
  • Be tidy
  • Bee-have!
The use of the school rules is seen as vital. Staff should reinforce the rules as often as possible.

Special Needs
Children who have difficulties abiding by our rules may require additional help. In these instances, the support services will be brought into advice. These will be:
Educational Psychology Service.
Education Welfare.
Special Needs Support Services.
Social Services.

Equal Opportunities
With regard to race, gender and disability, the Code of Behaviour applies to all children.

Guidelines
The separate sheets attached to the policy are intended to be useful to all staff in dealing with types of behaviour and discipline that they may encounter in school and in their approach to classroom management and organisation.  All staff members are expected to follow the guidelines in a consistent manner.

Monitoring
Guidelines will be regularly reviewed by all staff. The working party established for the review process currently meets fortnightly to develop and refine procedures in order to assess success.

An annual questionnaire (see anti- bullying policy) will be used by staff with all children in order to reinforce and check the children’s knowledge and understanding of procedures and action in the event of abuse or bullying. This will be completed in the autumn term. It will be repeated again in the following term/s if deemed necessary by staff.

The policy and guidelines will be formally reviewed annually.
