Ralph Harrison: who celebrated his 75th birthday on 20th September 2005, recalls his time spent at Rough Hay.
I joined the school in 1940 and walked to it from the old school in Dorset Road, with all the school carrying gas masks. Where your playing fields are now it was just a field with the school's pigsty and air-raid shelters. I helped to look after the pigs and got maybe a chop or sausages when they were butchered.

In class we all, boys and girls, had to knit a square to be sewed together for the forces. The Headteacher was a Mrs Heseltine and in the assembly hall she had cases of ornaments from Australia. Other teachers were Mrs Ball and Miss Parkinson, no men. We all did posters when Darlaston had a 'War Weapons Week' and the best were displayed in the Town Hall.

I would like to emphasise that no matter what school you go on to after Rough Hay, it will always be Rough Hay you'll have the fondest memories of, so thank you again and all the best to staff and children.
