Rough Hay School was opened on Tuesday 14th May, 1940. A diary entry made on that day reads:

Rough Hay School is open today. So far it appears likely that there will not be many transfers of the Dorsett Road children to other schools. I have not accepted any transfers either.

Owing to the war situation the Whitsuntide holiday has been cancelled. Mrs Davies appointed as Temporary Tr [sic] Class II.

One of those Dorsett Road children, Ralph Harrison, who celebrated his 75th birthday on 20th September 2005, recalls his time spent at Rough Hay.
